we are through before we begin

winter is the silent death
falling too soon upon a waking land
a sudden silence replaces the thrill of youth
a rose withers before it blooms

a child smiles for the first time
his eyes lighten with newfound mirth
before it escapes in laughter, he falls still
and the echo of never was rides on with the wind

in an empty square
the sullen face of an ancient clock
loses count of wasted time
we wait through the night for the glory of the sunrise
and in the light of day we see how deep darkness is
